Following Christ's Example of Service
“For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”
— John 13:15 (NIV)
In John 13:15, Jesus reminds His disciples that He has shown them how to live by His own actions—specifically, by washing their feet, the work of a servant. He's not asking them to simply believe in Him; He's calling them to imitate His humility and willingness to serve others, no matter how lowly the task might seem.
Today, you encounter opportunities to serve that might feel beneath you—helping a struggling coworker, listening to a lonely neighbor, or handling the unglamorous work at home. Jesus's example challenges you to see these moments not as obligations but as chances to reflect His character, showing that true greatness comes through humble, loving service to others.
Serve as Jesus Served
- 1Identify one person in your life who needs practical help—not advice or encouragement, but actual service (cooking, cleaning, listening, helping with a task).
- 2Perform that act of service today with the same heart Jesus showed when He washed His disciples' feet: without seeking recognition or thanks.
- 3Reflect on how this act changed your perspective on what it means to follow Jesus's example.
Jesus, help me see service through Your eyes and have the courage to follow Your humble example today.
Where in my life am I resisting the 'lowly' work of serving others, and how might embracing it reflect Jesus's example?
